English for Academic Purposes

Polk State College offers classes in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to help non-native speakers master the English language and continue their education. Polk’s EAP courses provide intensive practice in reading, grammar, writing, and communication. EAP is not the same as English as a Second Language (ESL).  Because the purpose of the EAP Program is to develop specific academic language skills, the courses are suitable for students with at least a basic level of English.

The instruction is based on modern teaching strategies and training multimedia tools. Under the guidance of experienced and devoted instructors, students improve their level of English by working in class, in college labs, and online. Successful completion of the EAP Program makes your English language skills sufficient for taking college credit courses. More information about EAP/ESL courses can be located in the Basic Course Information Catalog.

Individuals can enroll in EAP courses on both Lakeland and Winter Haven campuses. Classes are small and offered days and evenings in all semesters. The steps for administration are as follows:

  • Speak with an academic advisor in the Admission Office
  • Complete the Level of English Proficiency Test (LOEP) in the Teaching Learning Computer Center (TLCC) for placement into EAP courses of different levels
  • Follow the academic advisor’s instructions for registration

Individuals can find the start dates for each term and session in the College’s Academic Calendar. Additionally, available EAP courses can be found in PASSPORT by clicking on Course Schedules choosing the term in the drop-down menu, and typing in the keyword ESL.
